Innovation and Quality – A New School is Born in São Paulo

Innovation and Quality – Creating a New School in São Paulo

Registration for 2009 period has already started at Politeia School – an innovative educational project for the second cycle of fundamental school, located in a large and pleasant house next to the Agua Branca Park, Western region of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Politeia means at the same time the place where ancient Greeks practiced their debates on the destiny and administration of the Polis (cities) and the conjunction of multiple networks (“teias”).

The school is part of democratic schools network, having had its pedagogical project developed by the Politeia Association. This is a non-profit organization created by professionals, researchers and educators from different areas. The School is a project developed in partnership with Teia Multicultural School – which includes Kindergarden and Elementary school - located across the Agua Branca Park.

At Politeia School the students have active participation in the school management, building their own learning track by sharing knowledge and gradually taking responsibility for themselves and the community. Our ultimate goal is to develop happy, socially responsible and autonomous people who are capable of building their own life projects.

At Politeia, the teacher’s traditional role is transformed and s/he becomes an educator, a mentor and guide, who listens, fosters and searches new ways of learning. In the learning tracks, planned and developed by educators and students, a large range of research projects, new knowledge and issues are risen. These projects open the school to the city and enable it to embrace the city’s many historical and cultural aspects.

The school was born with strong purposes of establishing relationships and cooperating with its surroundings, aiming to guarantee contextualized and meaningful learning processes. On the other hand, Politeia’s participation in global networks with similar world wide schools allow foreign languages and cultures, such as English, to be lived and experienced with true interest and intensity.

In small groups the educator is able to focus individually on each student. Therefore the different paces and methods of learning enable students to have intellectual, emotional, social and physical growth. To this end a continuous and reflexive evaluation system was designed.

Developing responsible citizens with a critical view founded in universal values is a goal reached by the daily experience at the school community environment. To learn and pursue the skills needed to respect the diversity in terms of backgrounds and culture, dialoguing and taking responsibilities, students must have active participation in their whole life and school managements, in both individual and group learning paths.
